Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that drive inflamed breakouts and helps clear the blockages behind them. It's cheap, it's sold over the counter, and it's a first-line recommendation in most clinical guidelines for a reason: it works, and it works fast by acne standards.

The cheapest thing on this list is also one of the best-evidenced. Start here before anything more expensive.

It bleaches fabric — pillowcases, towels, dark clothing — so treat it accordingly. Start at 2.5% rather than jumping to a stronger strength; more percentage doesn't mean more results, just more irritation.

naturalSalicylic acidGentler, better for blackheads specifically. Often paired, not swapped.
treatmentTretinoinSlower but stronger long-term. A natural next step if this isn't enough alone.
naturalPore vacuum deviceSkip it. Does nothing for the bacteria actually causing breakouts.
